The statement from the Ivorian presidency said the announcement was made by the president of the Canadian mining group Montage Gold, Martino de Ciccio, who met with the head of state, Alassane Ouattara, in Abidjan on Thursday to inform him of the "discovery of a major world-class gold deposit in the departments of Kani and Dianra," located in the district of Woroba.

"The mineral resources of this deposit, the largest mine in the country to date, are estimated, according to Martino de Ciccio, at five million ounces, or 155.5 tons of gold with an average grade of 0.72g/t," the presidency added.

According to the president of the Canadian group, the annual processing capacity of the factory at this deposit, known as the Koné project, will be "11 million tons of ore."

Once operational, the mine will be "the third largest in West Africa," after those in Burkina Faso and Guinea, "which have capacities of 12.3 million tons and 12 million tons, respectively."

In November, Ivory Coast's Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly, estimated that the country would produce 55 tons of gold in 2024, compared to 41.8 tons in 2021, a figure already higher than in previous years.

An initial amount of 400 billion CFA francs (about 609 million euros) will be invested in the discovered deposit, which will create "4,500 direct and indirect jobs" and "finance social projects for the local population," according to the presidency.

Construction work on the mine will begin in the last quarter of 2024. The mine will go into production in 2027, with "an estimated lifespan of 20 years."

According to Coulibaly, Ivory Coast had 227 semi-industrial mines and 149 active artisanal mines at the end of 2023.

The country also has diamonds, iron, nickel, manganese, bauxite and copper.
