The remains of Elyakim Libman, a young Israeli man authorities believed had been taken hostage by Hamas after an October 7 attack, were found dead in Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed, saying the identification was made after an "extensive and comprehensive investigation."

Libman was working as a security guard at the SuperNova electronic music festival near Kibbutz Reim in southern Israel, close to Gaza, when it was stormed by Hamas militants in the early hours of October 7. According to his family, he stayed behind to help treat the wounded and was believed to have been abducted by the Islamist group.

However, on Friday, the IDF said the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Health Ministry had notified the family that he was "killed in the October 7 massacre" and his "body was discovered in Israeli territory."

The remains were identified through "an extensive and complex investigation conducted by the IDF, the Israel Police, and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine."

According to Israeli media, Libman's body had been mistakenly buried alongside another victim of the festival.

The war between Israel and Hamas erupted on July 8 when Hamas commandos carried out an attack that killed 1,170 people, the vast majority of them civilians, according to an AFP toll based on official Israeli figures.

More than 250 people were abducted and Israel says 132, including the dead, are still being held in Gaza.

In response, Israel vowed to crush Hamas and launched a major offensive on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 34,500 people, again mainly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Palestinian territory.
