After a marathon of sessions, which began on Tuesday, the presiding judge of the institution, María Eugenia López, announced the sentence that "declares that it is not unconstitutional" the decision of the Electoral Tribunal (TE) of March 4, which appointed Mulino, until then a candidate for vice-president, as a substitute for Martinelli, who was the presidential candidate for the party Realizando Metas (RM).

Martinelli, who governed Panama between 2009 and 2014, was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for money laundering, which led to his political removal.

The Supreme Court had admitted an action of unconstitutionality against the TE agreement, alleging that Mulino was running without a vice-president and that he had not been elected in primaries by the RM.

In a statement, the TE declared that, once the judicial decision was known, "the General Election Plan (Plagel) continues as planned for the installation of 7,574 polling stations on Sunday, May 5, throughout the country, so that all voters can freely and honestly exercise their sacred right to vote".

About three million voters are called to the polls to elect the new president and vice-president, 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament, 71 deputies to the National Assembly, 81 mayors, 701 municipal representatives and 11 councilors, for terms between July 1 and June 30, 2029.

The polls have shown Mulino in first place among the eight candidates, with 37.6% of the voting intentions, while his three immediate opponents remain at a distance.

Former President Martin Torrijos (Popular Party), Rómulo Roux (Democratic Change), and Ricardo Lombana (Another Way Movement), follow him with 16.4%, 14.9% and 12.7% of support, respectively.
