Russian justice extended the preventive detention of stage director Evgenia Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, accused of terrorism for having staged an award-winning play about the Islamic State.

The defense presented the court with a psychological examination describing the negative impact that Berkovich's detention has on her daughters' health, as well as the argument that her family obligations make it impossible for her to leave the country.
The detention of both was extended in early March and also last January.
In mid-April, the artists were classified as extremists for "justifying terrorism", under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code.
Amnesty International (AI) reported last August that the two have been detained since May 5, 2023 on terrorism charges related to their play "Finist Yasny Sokol", which tells the story of several women who traveled to Syria and married members of the Islamic State.
The play is based on the true story of Varvara Karaulova, a student at Moscow University who was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for trying to join the Islamic State after falling "in love" with a fighter.
