The Kremlin warned on Friday that the use of British weapons against targets on Russian territory represents a "direct escalation of tension" caused by the war in Ukraine and could "pose a danger to European security".

The statements in question were made by the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, who said that Ukraine "has every right" to use British-supplied weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

"Given the way Russia is attacking inside Ukraine, it is entirely legitimate for Ukraine to defend itself", the minister said, as quoted by the Reuters news agency, on the same day that he pledged to give £3 billion (€3.5 billion) a year to the country invaded by Russia "for as long as it takes".

For the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, this represents a "direct escalation of tension around the Ukrainian conflict, which could pose a danger to European security, to the entire European security architecture".

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, also considered that Cameron's statements prove that the "West is waging a secret war against Russia at the hands of the Ukrainians".

"This is the first time that a Western politician has so frankly acknowledged what has long been an open secret to most countries in the world: That the West is waging a secret war against Russia at the hands of the Ukrainians", she said, as quoted by Reuters, adding that "Russia will respond if Ukraine launches attacks on Russian territory with British weapons".

It should be noted that the war was triggered by the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin to "demilitarise and denazify" the neighbouring country, among other objectives.
