Amnesty condemns US crackdown on pro-Palestinian students
Amnesty International (AI) today condemned the "police repression" of demonstrations in support of the Palestinians at US universities, which have been peaceful but have already led to the detention of more than two thousand people, including teachers.

While some universities have engaged in dialogue with students, others have called in police forces, who have used a range of “violent” means to suppress peaceful pro-Palestinian protests, including concussion grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas, AI said.
“The New York Police Department specifically prevented media, including student journalists, legal observers and medics from carrying out their role of monitoring its actions, threatening to arrest them if they did not leave the area,” it said.
University administrations “should protect students’ rights,” it said, by facilitating peaceful resolutions rather than exposing them “to the risk of police violence”.
However, Amnesty said authorities had failed to take “appropriate measures to protect protesters from violence by third parties, such as at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)”.
