Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains hit Luwu district in South Sulawesi province on Friday, Indonesia's disaster agency BNPB said in a statement. "A total of 14 residents have died due to flooding and landslides in Luwu district, South Sulawesi province," Abdul Muhari, the agency's spokesman, said. More than 100 houses were heavily damaged and 42 were flattened, while four roads and a bridge were damaged, he added. More than 100 people have been evacuated to mosques or relatives' houses, and authorities are trying to evacuate more than 1,300 affected families. In a separate area of South Sulawesi province, at least one person died and two others were injured in a flood that hit on Friday, the agency's spokesman said in another statement. Indonesia suffers frequent landslides during its rainy season, a phenomenon that has been exacerbated in some areas by deforestation. In early March, flash floods and landslides on Sumatra island killed at least 30 people and dozens more were reported missing.
