The Observatory, through its website, announced that the rain warning signal is now red, due to the arrival of precipitation exceeding 50 millimeters per hour.

According to the message, these heavy rains "could cause", if they have not already, "severe flooding on the roads and traffic jams" and could "alter normal school hours".

The authorities of the Chinese Special Administrative Region, neighboring Macau, warned of "flash floods" due to landslides and asked the population to stay away from watercourses.

"Residents living near rivers should be aware of weather conditions and consider leaving if their homes are at risk of flooding," the agency said in a statement.

Southern China is also on alert for heavy rains in the coming hours.
