Mexico. The world's saddest elephant 'wins' historic court case
An elephant suffering from arthritis, psychological problems and other physical ailments has 'taken' his keepers to court.

Ely is considered the saddest elephant in the world and is the protagonist of an unprecedented legal action in Mexico. A federal court granted an injunction to the animal against acts committed by those responsible for the San Juan de Aragón Zoo.
The case became known after the situation was disclosed on social networks.
Despite initial objections, the court considered that this decision was justified for reasons of legitimate interest, emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment and animals as sensitive beings, says the newspaper Excélsior.
The elephant of African origin, who was rescued from a circus in 2012, has several pathologies that affect her daily. She suffers from arthritis in her right front leg due to the effort she was subjected to in her shows to climb platforms. The animal also suffers from psychological disorders after seven years of isolation and other diseases, such as hyperkeratosis, which is characterized by a thickening of the outer layer of the skin.
A year ago, on May 8, 2023, the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) handed over custody of the animal to the zoo to ensure its well-being. That same month, another elephant, Gispy, arrived at the facilities to be Ely's companion, as part of the recommendations made by wildlife experts.
However, despite the improvement measures taken at the time, Ely's physical and mental health did not improve. Thus, the court recognized the right to a life free from mistreatment and ordered that the necessary measures be taken to avoid damage to the elephant's physical or mental health.
Thus, it will be necessary to establish a complete feeding and medical care program to ensure that Ely has adequate living conditions and these measures will have to be inspected to ensure that they are complied with.
