Anti-war Gaza protests erupt at US college graduation

Anti-war protests over Israel-Hamas fighting disrupted a University of Michigan graduation ceremony in the United States on Saturday, with chants and Palestinian flags but no arrests, officials said.

The protest came early in the event at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, with about 75 people, many wearing the traditional Arab “kaffiyeh” headdress, marching down the main aisle toward the stage as graduates were receiving their diplomas.

Officials said no arrests were made and the protest did not seriously disrupt the nearly two-hour ceremony, which was attended by thousands of people, some waving Israeli flags, prompting state police to step in to keep the demonstrators from reaching the stage.

“Peaceful protests such as this have been occurring at University of Michigan commencement ceremonies for decades,” said university spokeswoman Colleen Conway.

Michigan was among several schools that braced for protests during graduation ceremonies this weekend.

In recent weeks, sit-ins by student protesters have spread across college campuses nationwide in a student movement unseen this century, urging their universities to divest from Israel or companies they say support the war in Gaza.

Some schools have reached agreements with protesters to end the demonstrations and reduce the potential for disruption to final exams and graduation ceremonies.

Many of the encampments have been dismantled and protesters have been arrested in police crackdowns.

The Associated Press has counted at least 61 incidents since April 18 in which arrests were made at protests on U.S. college campuses.

More than 2,400 people have been arrested on 47 college and university campuses, based on AP reporting and statements from universities and law enforcement agencies.

In Princeton, New Jersey, 18 students began a hunger strike in an effort to pressure their university to divest from companies tied to Israel.

The protests have roiled campuses in cities across the United States since a Hamas militant attack on southern Israel killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took captive two Israeli soldiers.

In the ensuing war, Israel killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, according to the local Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
