"May the Lord welcome the dead and give comfort to their families and to all who have had to abandon their homes," said the pontiff.

More than 82,500 people have had to leave their homes in Rio Grande do Sul, of whom 13,324 remain in public shelters, according to Efe.

The data that has been revealed by the authorities also points to at least 59 deaths following the floods that have devastated the south of the country for several days, of which 55 were registered in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which borders Uruguay and Argentina, and the most affected by the weather.

According to Efe, another 11 deaths have been counted in the areas affected by the rains, but the authorities are still investigating whether the cause is effectively related to the floods.

There is also a record of at least 74 missing people.

In an assessment carried out on Saturday, the authorities indicated that more than one million homes were without water.
