The Ukrainian air force said Russia had launched 24 Iranian-made “kamikaze” drones overnight, 23 of which were shot down, and some missiles, wounding 16 people including a child in the eastern Kharkiv region.
In turn, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its troops had taken control of the village of Ocheretyne, which has been in the crosshairs of Russian forces in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.
Aerial footage of the site obtained by The Associated Press showed the village devastated by the fighting, with every building hit.
Kyiv authorities have asked Orthodox believers to follow the celebrations “online” due to security risks.
“Even on such a bright holiday, we can expect malicious actions from the aggressor,” warned Kyiv administrator Serhiy Popko.
In his Easter message, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Ukrainians to be “united in common prayer.”
In a video filmed in front of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, wearing a traditional embroidered shirt, Zelenskyy said that God “has a Ukrainian flag on his shoulder,” and with “such an ally,” “life will definitely overcome death.”
In Moscow, Orthodox faithful, including President Vladimir Putin, filled Christ the Savior Cathedral for an overnight Easter service led by Patriarch Kirill, an outspoken supporter of the Kremlin.
