The state of Rio Grande do Sul - which borders Argentina and Uruguay and is the most affected by the rains - registered 66 deaths in the latest report, while the neighboring state of Santa Catarina registered one death.

In addition, the authorities are investigating whether six other deaths are related to the climate tragedy that has hit the south of the country since the beginning of the week and is already considered the worst natural disaster in the region's history.

The floods displaced tens of thousands of people: a total of 80,573 residents had to leave their homes and move into the homes of relatives and friends, while 15,192 found accommodation in public shelters.

In Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of 11 million people, about 421,000 homes remain without electricity and 115 municipalities have no telephone and internet services, and there are still 61 roads with total and partial blockages due to flooding of the rivers.

The level of the Guaíba River - whose waters flooded the historic center of the regional capital, Porto Alegre, a city of 1.3 million inhabitants - rose again this morning to the highest level in history.

The city's international airport, which closed on Friday night after the flood reached the runways, remains closed.

After visiting the affected region on Thursday, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, travels again today to Rio Grande do Sul, to monitor the response to this situation, for which the Government has deployed a thousand soldiers in support of the regional government.

The authorities of Rio Grande do Sul warned that, despite the reduction in rainfall at the weekend, the floods are expected to continue for several days.

In the past year, southern Brazil has suffered a series of extreme weather events associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which has caused an increase in rainfall in this part of the country.
