"The army is urging residents of the eastern part of Rafah to move to the expanded humanitarian zones," it said in a statement.

The UN has estimated that about 1.2 million people, most of them displaced by the fighting, are in Rafah, which Israel has for months insisted it intends to invade with a major ground offensive.

The Israeli military stressed that the operation to clear people from the eastern part of the town of Rafah was temporary and "limited in scope".

"We have begun a limited operation to temporarily remove people living in the eastern part of Rafah," a military spokesman told a news conference, repeating: "This is a limited operation in scope."

On July 8, a Hamas attack in southern Israel killed nearly 1,200 people, most of them civilians. The Islamist movement took more than 250 hostages, of whom 128 are still being held in Gaza and 35 are reported by Israel to have died.

In response, Israel vowed to destroy Hamas and launched a major offensive in the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 34,600 people, most of them civilians, according to the Palestinian Islamist movement's health ministry.

Hamas is considered a terrorist organisation by several countries, including Israel, the United States and the European Union.
