The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that the armed forces will organize "in the near future" nuclear exercises involving troops stationed near Ukraine, in response to alleged threats from Western leaders.

Asked about this by AFP, the Russian presidency spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, said that the announcement of the military maneuvers was linked to the statements made by President Emmanuel Macron, by British representatives and by a representative of the United States Senate.

According to Peskov, these leaders "spoke about the desire and even the intention to send armed contingents to Ukraine, that is, to put NATO soldiers in front of the Russian army".

The Kremlin spokesman considered that this is a "new cycle of escalation of tension", denouncing the "very dangerous rhetoric" of the French president.

Emmanuel Macron once again assumed, in early May, the possibility of sending Western troops to the ground in Ukraine if Moscow broke "the front lines" and if Kiev requested help.

"To rule it out 'a priori' (the possibility of sending NATO troops), is not to have learned the lessons of the last two years", said Peskov, recalling that the countries of the Atlantic Alliance initially ruled out sending tanks and planes to Ukraine, but changed their minds by sending this military equipment to Kiev.

The French head of state had already created controversy at the end of February by stating that sending troops to Ukraine should not "be ruled out" in the future.

Most European countries, as well as the United States, however, clearly distanced themselves from Macron's remarks, even if some have since taken a step in that direction in the face of the Russian advance on the eastern Ukrainian front.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
