South African police arrest more than 600,000 people in a year
South African police have arrested an average of 50,000 people per month over the past 12 months, during which time about 50,000 explosives and more than 22,000 firearms of various calibres were seized, it was announced today.

In the presentation of the balance of the first 12 months of the police operation "Shanela", which began in May 2023 to combat the high crime rate in several parts of the country, the South African Police Ministry indicated that of the more than 600,000 people arrested in one year, at least 183 were arrested for human trafficking, and more than 2,500 for murder.
During the period under analysis, South African security forces seized, among other things, 89,360 rounds of ammunition, 49,276 explosives, 22,525 firearms, 174 thousand kilos of copper, 167.2 million illegally imported products, 7,718 diamonds and more than 5.8 million rands (294 thousand euros) in cash, according to South African security authorities.
The electricity company of the city of Johannesburg City Power recently appealed to the South African army to intervene in the fight against the theft of copper electrical cables and vandalism of the electrical infrastructure in the economic capital of South Africa.
The crimes of theft and vandalism of municipal energy infrastructure cost City Power more than 160 million rands (eight million euros) in the current year, announced the South African public company, adding that Johannesburg residents report about 4,000 electrical failures daily to that entity.
