At least 86 dead and 134 missing in floods in southern Brazil
At least 86 people have died and 134 are missing due to the floods caused by heavy rains in southern Brazil, authorities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul indicated in a new report.

The previous assessment indicated 84 deaths and 111 missing in the environmental catastrophe that is taking place in a large part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, on the border with Argentina and Uruguay.
The authorities are investigating the causes of four other deaths to determine if they are related to the rains, which have been affecting southern Brazil for a week.
The rains, which have only now begun to diminish in this region of the country, have affected more than 1.1 million inhabitants in 385 municipalities, who are suffering from a lack of food, medicine and basic services such as electricity and water.
Data from the local Civil Defense indicate that, of this total, 153,824 people were forced to leave their homes, finding themselves in the homes of family and friends, while another 47,676 are in shelters improvised by the authorities.
The Guaíba River flooded the historic center of Porto Alegre, the regional capital, and several cities in the metropolitan region, but the floods and landslides caused considerable damage in many cities in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.
With a population of 11 million inhabitants, Rio Grande do Sul has a total of 496 municipalities, of which 385 were affected.
At least 1.2 million homes and commercial establishments remain without electricity and 98 municipalities are without telephone and internet services.
In addition, 47 roads have registered total or partial blockages due to rising rivers and landslides.
More than 14,500 rescuers from various states and the military are currently deployed to help the victims.
