After casting his vote in the largest city in his home state of Gujarat, Modi emerged with security guards and flashed an ink-marked finger to cheering supporters.

Shortly afterward, in a message on social media platform Koo (formerly Twitter), Modi appealed for a vote "to strengthen (...) democracy."

India's staggered parliamentary election is being held in seven phases from April 11 to June 1. The third phase is taking place Monday in parts of the northeastern state of Assam, the central states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, the western states of Goa and Gujarat, the southern state of Karnataka and the western territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Modi, 73, has led his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to successive general election victories in 2014 and 2019, and remains popular after two terms in which India has sought to boost its diplomatic clout and economic heft.

The opposition and rights activists have decried democratic backsliding and criticized Modi's appeals to India's majority Hindu faith at the expense of large minorities, including India's 210 million Muslims.

Voter turnout in the ongoing general election has so far fallen short of the 2019 level, which Indian media attributed in part to sweltering temperatures.

In Mathura, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where temperatures hit 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit) on polling day April 26, the Election Commission noted a nearly nine percentage point drop in turnout compared with 2019.

The weather bureau has forecast more scorching temperatures in the coming days in several states, including Madhya Pradesh and the eastern state of Bihar, which vote Monday.

In the southern state of Telangana, where voting is scheduled for later in May, authorities announced that polling stations would remain open for an extra hour because of the heat.
