"My commitment to the security of the Jewish people, to the security of Israel, and to its right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state is unwavering. Even when we disagree," the US leader assured, during his speech at a Capitol ceremony remembering the victims of the Holocaust.

Biden condemned the "ugly surge of anti-Semitism in America and around the world", after protests against the war in Gaza spread to more than 50 US universities, some of them with demonstrations against Jews.

"We risk a world where people don't know the truth," Biden said of the horrors of the Holocaust, a tragedy in which more than six million Jews were killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators.

Biden's comments at the Capitol echoed his concern about pro-Palestinian protests on numerous college campuses, some of which have involved anti-Semitic chants and threats against Jewish students and supporters of Israel.

Biden has struggled to balance his support for Israel after the Hamas onslaught that began on July 8 with his efforts to limit civilian casualties from the war against the Islamist group in Gaza.

"This hatred remains deeply embedded in the hearts of too many people around the world," the US president added about anti-Semitism, arguing that in the July 8 onslaught, Hamas had fed that hatred by killing more than 1,200 Israelis, most of them civilians.

"Not 75 years ago, but seven and a half months ago, people are already starting to forget that Hamas started this terror, that Hamas brutalized the Israelis, that Hamas took hostages and still holds hostages. I have not forgotten. We will not forget," Biden vowed.
