Stormy Daniels detailed that Trump, who she said she viewed as a man her father’s age, then 60, did not give her any money or his phone number “or anything like that,” nor did he ask her to keep the encounter confidential or express concern about his wife, Melania Trump.
The Associated Press described jurors as appearing riveted as the former actress, over repeated objections from defense attorneys and occasional admonishments from the judge, offered a detailed and at times graphic account of an encounter that Trump denies.
The Republican politician and White House hopeful, accused of concealing a hush-money payment to Daniels from his campaign finances, stared straight ahead as she entered the courtroom, then shook his head and whispered to his lawyers as he listened to her testimony.
The testimony is a centerpiece of the case because in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 Republican presidential campaign, Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen allegedly paid Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about what she says was an awkward and unexpected sexual encounter following a celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe in July 2006.
Under questioning by the prosecutor, Daniels recounted how an initial encounter at a golf tournament, where they discussed the adult film industry, led to a brief sexual encounter that she said Trump initiated after inviting her to dinner and then back to his hotel suite.
Afterward, she said, “It was very difficult to find my shoes because my hands were shaking so much.”
Trump allegedly told her he hoped to see her again, but she “just wanted to leave.”
Since the encounter became public, Daniels has emerged as an antagonist to Trump’s version of events, sharing her story in a book and on television and assailing the former president in profane tirades.
After several skirmishes with the judge and Trump’s lawyers, prosecutor Susan Hoffinger conducted her questioning cautiously, instructing the witness to keep her answers brief and free of extraneous details.
Judge Juan M. Merchan repeatedly overruled Daniels’s attempts to describe the encounter in more vivid terms, striking several of her answers from the official record of the trial.
Cohen allegedly paid Daniels after learning that she was prepared to go on the record with the National Enquirer or on television to confirm a sexual encounter.
Prosecutors have charged Trump with falsifying business records in what they say was a scheme to conceal the hush-money payment made during the 2016 presidential campaign to keep Daniels quiet about an extramarital affair she says she had with Trump a decade earlier.
The charges against Trump stem from an investigation launched by the Manhattan district attorney’s office into the mogul’s alleged efforts to suppress negative media coverage about his sex life.
Michael Cohen, who was also a vice president of the Trump Organization, arranged the payment, reimbursing himself for the $130,000, and the former president is accused of reimbursing Cohen by disguising the payments as legal expenses in the company’s records.
Cohen was sentenced in December 2018 to three years in prison.
