In April 2022, more than two tonnes of cocaine were seized in the port cities of Abidjan and San Pedro, a record for the country, with an estimated market value of 41 billion CFA francs (62 million euros) and around thirty people were arrested.

At today's hearing, 13 people of different nationalities were convicted of "international drug trafficking" and "criminal conspiracy" and will have to pay, individually, a fine of 50 million CFA francs (around 76,000 euros).

Among them are the former Spanish police officer Miguel Angel Devesa, the mastermind of the operations in Ivory Coast, as well as a regional councillor and a police commissioner from San Pedro, César Ouattara and Dosso Karamoko.

Miguel Angel Devesa was also ordered to pay 60 billion CFA francs (around 91 million euros) in compensation to the State of Ivory Coast.

Three businessmen were sentenced to 24 months in prison and fined 30 million CFA francs (around 45,000 euros) for "criminal conspiracy" and "tax fraud".

Lamand Bakayoko, former head of the anti-drug section of the San Pedro police (south-west), was acquitted.

Abdoulaye Ben Méité, lawyer for the Government of Ivory Coast, welcomed the trial, which began in December 2023, and hailed its "satisfactory outcome".

"The Ivorian authorities have decided to crack down, they have decided to put an end" to this illegal trade, he told reporters.

"It was not a good decision," said Miguel Angel Devesa's lawyer, Zakaria Touré, who told AFP that his client "helped find the people who participated in the crime" and assured that he will appeal.

The investigation revealed a vast drug trafficking network (cocaine) operating between Suriname, Colombia, Italy, Spain and Ivory Coast, prosecutor Nina Kamagaté explained in a press release.

The convicted now have 20 days to appeal the court's decision.
