In addition, the Civil Defense indicated that 1.5 million people were affected, counted 131 missing people and 362 injured in the unprecedented rains and floods that mainly affected the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
So far, 401 municipalities have been affected, "practically the entire state," said Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite, at a press conference. The announcement of new storms starting today put the authorities on alert, who are already preparing contingency measures. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), heavy rains and storms are expected in the coming days in the southernmost region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, throughout the border area with Uruguay, due to the arrival of a cold front. The governor appealed to the inhabitants of the municipalities that have already been affected and that may be hit again by the rains to remain in shelters and only return to see what happened to their homes when the authorities confirm that their lives are completely out of danger. Rio Grande do Sul was the Brazilian state most affected by the rains, with at least 95 dead, while the neighboring state of Santa Catarina registered one death. A total of 1.5 million people are already suffering from a lack of food, medicine and basic services such as electricity and energy, of which about 160,000 are sheltered in the homes of friends or relatives and another 48,799 in shelters improvised by the authorities.
