The closure of the crossing by Israeli forces came after a barrage of Hamas rocket fire killed four Israeli soldiers.

An Israeli tank brigade took up positions at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Tuesday, preventing any movement.

Associated Press journalists heard sporadic explosions and gunfire in the area overnight, including two large blasts early on Tuesday morning.

Rafah has been a conduit for humanitarian aid since the war began and is the only point where people can enter or leave the enclave.

Israel now controls all the crossings into the Palestinian territory.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says at least 46 patients who need to leave the enclave for medical treatment have been stranded.

UN agencies and aid groups have been ramping up their humanitarian response in recent weeks after Israel eased restrictions and opened a new crossing in the north under US pressure.

But aid workers said the closure of Rafah, through which fuel for trucks and generators enters, could have serious repercussions.

The UN has warned that northern Gaza is already in a state of "near total food insecurity".

The Associated Press said the operation to secure the crossing appeared to be a limited incursion rather than the start of a full-scale invasion of Rafah that Israeli forces have threatened.

Israel has said it will "expand the operation" if ongoing contacts with Hamas over a ceasefire and the release of a captive soldier fail to make progress.
