A 14-year-old student is being hailed as a hero by his Wisconsin community after he took control of his school bus when the driver passed out with her foot on the gas pedal.
The eighth-grader has received accolades from the mayor’s office, as well as the police, fire and rescue departments.
The incident happened in April when Holland got on the bus for his ride to school and noticed the driver was slumped over and unresponsive. Her foot, however, was still on the accelerator.
“She went through the curve and there’s another street we usually turn on. She went through it and I looked up,” Acie Holland III told CNN affiliate WTMJ.
That’s when the teen pushed the driver out of the way, grabbed the wheel and steered the bus to a stop on the side of the road, then called 911 while other students called their parents.
“He’s always been a quick thinker. That’s one thing I know he can do, not only on the bus but in general, being able to help somebody. I’m proud of what he did,” said the boy’s father, who owns an auto body shop.
It was the teen’s exposure to different types of vehicles that gave him the confidence to drive the bus, his father said.
