Liya Barko, one of the survivors of the deadly attack at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney on April 13, has been reunited with the man who saved her life.
The 35-year-old had spoken about the mystery "hero" in interviews since but had been unable to find him until now. Speaking to 9News earlier this week, she recalled the man wearing a green shirt and said: "I would love to see him again, just to give him a hug."
Now, the Australian network has facilitated their reunion. The man has been identified as Wayne Tolver Banks, a former soldier.
"Oh my god, I remember you were so tall," Barko said as they embraced on Tuesday.
"I'm just so happy you're alive," Tolver Banks replied.
The man said the attacker, Joel Cauchi, had looked at him and shaken his head as if to say he would not be targeted, before stabbing Barko.
The former soldier quickly bundled Barko into a nearby store for safety, where his wife helped care for her until paramedics arrived.
"I looked at you when I saw that man stabbing you and I said to myself I have to help you … I didn't want you to die," Tolver Banks told the woman.
"Your wife was the one who started fanning me when I started saying, 'I want to give up' … she was the one saying, 'You're doing so well'," Barko said. "To me … you were the angel that appeared at the right time and the right place," she added.
Liya Barko, originally from Ukraine, later moved to Argentina. She had been living in Sydney for the past 18 months, studying and working as a cleaner.
Joel Cauchi killed six people - Jade Young, Yixuan Cheng, Pikria Darchia, Faraz Tahir , Dawn Singleton and Ashlee Good - and injured 12 others before he was shot dead by police. Cauchi, 40, had a history of mental illness, which police said ruled out terrorism as a motive. They believe he may have been targeting women.
