Two children, ages 2 and 4, died Tuesday after they were swept away by a creek in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California.
The incident occurred when the children’s mother took her 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son to the Thurman Flat picnic area near Mill Creek, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
The siblings were playing by the creek when the girl was swept away by the current while her mother was tending to her son, authorities said.
"The mother searched for her but was unable to locate her. When she returned, her son was also missing and presumed to have also gone downstream,” the statement said.
After searching for her children, the woman went to a nearby picnic area and asked another family for help, but was unsuccessful.
Rescue crews arrived on scene about 4 p.m. and located both children, who were taken to local hospitals where they were pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.
