Cruise ship arrives in New York with 43-foot dead whale on bow

A cruise ship arrived at a New York City port with a dead whale lodged in its bow, maritime officials said, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The animal was 43 feet (13 meters) long and was identified as an endangered North Atlantic right whale. It became stuck on the bow of the MSC Meraviglia as it arrived in Brooklyn on Saturday, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokeswoman Andrea Gomez.
“We immediately notified the proper authorities, who are now conducting a necropsy on the whale,” officials with the MSC Cruises company said in a statement.
The cruise line said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life” and that it follows regulations to protect whales, including altering course to avoid hitting the animals.
The whale was taken for a necropsy Tuesday, and samples collected will help determine whether it was already dead when it was struck by the ship.
