"The UN Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the heavy rains and floods in southern Brazil," said a statement issued by Guterres’ Spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, extending his condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Brazil, as well as to the families of the victims.

"The UN team on the ground stands ready to support the people of Brazil at this difficult time," he added.

The UN chief, who has made environmental issues a priority of his tenure, went on to observe that disasters such as this "are a reminder of the devastating impacts of the climate crisis on lives and livelihoods."

Guterres reiterated his call for urgent international action to curb "the chaotic effects of climate change."

The death toll from flooding in southern Brazil has risen to 101 from 96, according to a new tally released by local authorities on Sunday.

Nearly all of the deaths occurred in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which has so far confirmed 100 fatalities, according to the local Civil Defense. The state of Santa Catarina has registered one death.

Experts have warned of the risk of further problems as weather conditions in the region could be aggravated by a cold front that is reaching the southern part of the state and will cause rain and a drop in temperatures this week, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

With 11 million inhabitants, Rio Grande do Sul has been heavily affected by climate change. After suffering from a severe drought due to the La Niña phenomenon last year, the region began to be affected by El Niño and has registered four climate disasters caused by extratropical cyclones and storms in less than 12 months.

In 2023, three events occurred in June, September and November, leaving 75 dead in the Brazilian state.
