“We are reviewing some security assistance deliveries in light of what’s happening in Rafah at this time,” Pentagon chief General Lloyd Austin told a Senate subcommittee hearing.
“We do not believe that major combat operations in Rafah are in the interest of anybody, but our focus is on protecting civilians,” he added, reiterating the position the US has maintained for weeks. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller went further, announcing that the US was looking at withholding further arms shipments to Israel. It was a move that progressive Democrats have been urging Biden to make for weeks, as they have grown increasingly critical of Israel’s war on Gaza. Just a month ago, some 40 Congress members, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, urged Biden to take the punitive measure against Netanyahu. They did so after an Israeli strike killed seven aid workers from the NGO World Central Kitchen, run by Spanish chef José Andrés. The Pentagon chief did not detail what the withheld shipment contained, though he said it was “high-precision munitions”. According to CNN, the package in question is for 3,500 bombs, including 1,800 weighing 2,000 pounds and 1,700 weighing 500 pounds. The US is said to be particularly concerned about Israel’s use of the heavier bombs in densely populated areas. Read Also: Israel closes Gaza crossing again
