The organization estimated, on Wednesday, at 6.4 billion reais (1.19 billion euros) the losses caused so far by the greatest environmental tragedy ever recorded in Rio Grande do Sul, a state in the south of the country, on the border with Argentina and Uruguay.
Almost half of these losses relate to damage to homes. The Confederation clarified that this assessment includes the data reported so far by the municipalities, but these are still partial numbers, updated daily, and more time is needed to account for all the losses. Not all municipalities have reported data and some are facing difficulties in doing so due to damage to infrastructure and communication systems, it added. Regional authorities have recorded 101 deaths and 130 missing in the rains and floods that affected 425 of the 497 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul and about 1.48 million people, of whom 67,428 had to seek shelter in schools, gyms and churches and another 167,786 in the homes of family and friends, according to the latest assessment.

The Confederation indicated that the economic activities most affected by the floods, in cities and large rural areas, are agriculture, with estimated losses of 594.6 million reais (108 million euros), and livestock (27 million euros). Rio Grande do Sul is the largest rice producer in Brazil and the rains destroyed part of the harvest, so the government has already authorized imports to prevent price increases. Losses in industry are estimated at 34 million euros, in commerce at seven million euros and in the services sector at 10.6 million euros. In terms of material damage, the floods caused damage to schools, hospitals and public buildings estimated at 64 million euros. Damage to infrastructure works, including bridges, roads, electricity and sewage networks, totaled 260 million euros. Among the affected infrastructures are the airport and the Porto Alegre land transport terminal, the regional capital, which have been paralyzed since Monday. The city's airport, with 1.3 million inhabitants, is only expected to resume operations at the end of May. Although the authorities have reported that the water level of some rivers had begun to drop, the resumption of rains on Wednesday afternoon, at least in Porto Alegre, interrupted the descent and forced firefighters to suspend rescue work for isolated people. Rio Grande do Sul expects a new storm front between Wednesday night and this morning, with winds estimated at 90 kilometers per hour, which could worsen the situation and the losses.
