A spokesperson for the Gauteng provincial government’s department of social development, agriculture, rural development and environmental affairs, where Johannesburg is located, said that South African police found the young Mozambicans during a labour department inspection of the factory premises in the southeast of the country’s economic hub.
The youngsters were then taken to the Mary Moodley Children and Youth Care Centre in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, where they are awaiting repatriation to Mozambique, said the spokesperson, Themba Gadebe. South African authorities have opened a case of child labour, poor working conditions and employing undocumented minors against the owner of the electrical supply company in Nigel, he said. According to the government spokesperson, the eight young Mozambicans entered South Africa on 15 January in a minibus taxi, together with 14 other boys from the same village in the neighbouring Lusophone country. “The driver of the taxi allegedly comes from the same village and asked the youngsters and their families if they were interested in working in Johannesburg. He informed the recruits and their families that there was no need for passports or documents,” he said. A juvenile court in Nigel on Tuesday authorised the Gauteng provincial authorities to proceed with the repatriation of the young Mozambicans to their home country, where they will be handed over to social workers from the neighbouring country at the Komatipoort border post with Ressano Garcia, on the Mozambican side, according to the South African authorities.
