The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, the state most affected by the storms, reported that 107 people died in occurrences related to the heavy rains and that it is still investigating another death. The authorities of the state of Santa Catarina have confirmed one death.
According to the authorities of Rio Grande do Sul, there are 136 missing people and 374 injured due to the floods that directly affect about 1.5 million people and more than 80% of the state's territory.
More than 67,000 people are in shelters created to accommodate the population removed from flooded and risk areas, and there are still 164,583 people displaced.
In 425 of the 497 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul, there are records of problems related to the greatest climate disaster that occurred in this Brazilian state.
Hundreds of police officers, firefighters, soldiers, and volunteers continue to work hard to rescue people who are still isolated due to the high water level and who are starting to suffer from lack of food.
More rain in the last few hours forced the suspension of rescue work in Porto Alegre, the regional capital of Rio Grande do Sul, where there are still completely flooded neighborhoods and the main airport will be closed at least until the end of this month.
The heavy storm began on Monday of last week and continued in the following days, causing great damage to roads, bridges, homes, and leaving a large part of the gaucho population without electricity or drinking water.
With 11 million inhabitants, Rio Grande do Sul has been greatly affected by climate change. After suffering problems with a severe drought due to the La Niña phenomenon, last year the region began to be affected by El Niño and has registered, in less than 12 months, four climate disasters caused by extratropical cyclones and storms.
In 2023, three events occurred, in June, September, and November, causing 75 deaths in this Brazilian state.
