Cardboard coffins ‘invaded’ one of Milan’s most famous squares on Friday to highlight the number of workplace deaths in Italy.
The protest was organized by the country’s second-largest labor union, the Italian Workers’ Union (UIL), which called on both the government and businesses to do more for workers. “Today is a day of anger, of anguish, because behind each coffin that we have placed here there are names and surnames,” union leader Enrico Vezza was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. He noted that 41 workers have died in Lombardy so far this year, adding to the 172 represented in Piazza La Scala who died in the region in 2023. Under the banner ‘Zero Deaths’, a plaque in the square gave the number of workplace fatalities since 2018. There was a spike in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, when there were 1,709 deaths. Last year, 1,041 people died at work. Italy has the eighth highest rate of workplace deaths in Europe, with 2.66 per 100,000 workers, compared to the EU average of 1.76, according to Eurostat figures.
