"The death toll has so far reached 50, according to the Baghlan-e-Markazi district hospital," Hedayatullah Hamdard, head of the provincial authority for disaster management, told AFP, adding that the number of victims could rise.

Seasonal rains caused flash floods and "people who were not prepared could not save themselves", Hamdard said.

Rescue teams are "searching for victims who may be trapped in the mud or under the rubble", the provincial official added.

Flooding has killed around 100 people in 10 provinces since mid-April, with no region spared, according to the authorities.

Vast swathes of agricultural land have been inundated in a country where some 80 percent of Afghanistan's more than 40 million people rely on farming to survive.

The country, ravaged by four decades of war and among the world's poorest, suffered a very dry winter that left the ground less able to absorb the rainfall.

Responsible for just 0.06 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, Afghanistan is ranked as the sixth most vulnerable nation to climate change, according to scientists.
