In a letter sent Wednesday by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Baghdad government argues that there is "no need for the continuation" of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.
Al-Sudani said the Iraqi government has "managed to achieve a number of important steps" in areas that fall under the UN mission's mandate, rendering it redundant.
The mission is renewed annually by the UN Security Council, with the current mandate set to expire at the end of the month.
In the letter, al-Sudani does not oppose a one-year extension, but argues that the mission should focus on wrapping up its tasks to ensure an eventual closure and transfer of its responsibilities by the end of 2025.
Created in 2003 in the wake of the US-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, the mission has been tasked with a range of objectives, including facilitating dialogue among the country's diverse communities, assisting with electoral logistics, monitoring human rights and coordinating aid in conflict-affected areas.
The Iraqi government has been moving to rid the country of international bodies set up in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion.
Earlier this year, Iraq began talks to wind down the US-led military coalition mission formed to combat the Islamic State group.
Baghdad has also decided not to renew the mandate of a UN investigative team looking into crimes committed by IS, and has asked it to leave by September this year.
