The Cogat, the Defense Ministry body that oversees civilian affairs in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, announced "the transfer of 200,000 liters of fuel for international organizations," via the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and the southern enclave.

After the trucks were inspected, "the fuel was transferred to meet the current essential needs of the international community, including hospitals, humanitarian organizations, logistics centers and aid distribution," Cogat said in a statement.

On Thursday, the UN warned that Israel's closure of key Gaza crossings had cut off a major aid lifeline, particularly for fuel, and was making humanitarian operations "virtually impossible."

UNICEF warned the same day that fuel reserves in the territory were down to a matter of days or even hours, and appealed to the international community to intervene to get humanitarian crossings into the enclave opened.

The coordinator for medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Gaza, Sylvain Groulx, recalled to Agence France Presse (AFP) on Friday that since the seven-week war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas began, Israel has cut off electricity and most essential services now rely on fuel to operate.

"It is therefore imperative that Israel, under its responsibilities as occupying power, either provides electricity or ensures that fuel is available in sufficient quantities, which obviously implies opening the crossings," he said.

Defying international warnings, the Israeli military has since Tuesday been carrying out a ground operation in the east of the southern Gaza town of Rafah, and has taken control of the Palestinian side of the border crossing with Egypt, blocking a key entry point for aid into Gaza, in addition to Kerem Shalom, which Israel has also kept closed.

Rik Peeperkorn, head of the World Health Organization in the Palestinian territories, on Wednesday stressed the "absolute necessity" of allowing fuel in, without which "all humanitarian operations, including hospital operations, will stop."

Gaza has been devastated by the war that began on July 8 with a Hamas attack on Israeli soil that killed three soldiers, triggering an Israeli air and ground assault.

Since then, the Israeli offensive on Gaza has killed more than 1,100 people, mostly civilians, including many women and children, according to the latest figures from the health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave.
