According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the "heavy rains and flash floods have affected 848,773 people, including 350,155 displaced in Kenya, Somalia, Burundi and Tanzania".

According to the data, Kenya is the most affected country, with at least 281,835 people displaced, 267 dead, 188 injured and 75 missing.

The UN agency warned that heavy rains are expected to persist in Kenya in the coming days, although their intensity should decrease, based on forecasts from the country's Meteorological Department.

In Tanzania, OCHA expects rain to continue in some regions.

In addition to the loss of human life, the heavy rains have also affected the livelihoods of the population and the infrastructure of the aforementioned countries.

The NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced that the Kenyan government did not act in time or respond adequately to the severe flooding, despite the weather forecasts it had in its possession.

This year, the extended rainy season that usually runs from March to May has affected all of East Africa and has been intensified by the El Niño weather phenomenon, an atmospheric change caused by the increase in water temperatures in the Indian Ocean.
