The past 24 hours saw 63 people killed in the devastated Palestinian enclave, bringing the overall death toll since October to 35,034, while at least 114 were wounded, raising the total number of injured to 78,755 since the start of the offensive.

The figures come as the Israeli military expanded its strikes on Rafah, in the southern tip of the Gaza Strip, from where an estimated 300,000 people have fled under the threat of relentless bombardment.

The war erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas commandos infiltrated from Gaza into Israel and carried out an unprecedented attack that killed more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

More than 250 people were kidnapped and 128 are still being held captive in Gaza, 36 of whom are presumed dead, according to the army.

In response, Israel has vowed to "annihilate Hamas", which has controlled Gaza since 2007, and free the hostages.
