Dozens killed, hundreds displaced in Darfur clashes

The escalation of fighting in Al-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state in Sudan, and the use of heavy weapons have killed about 30 people and displaced hundreds more in recent days, the UN said on Thursday.

In a statement, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that fighting between the Sudanese army and allied rebel groups against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resumed on 10 May in Al-Fasher, causing at least 27 deaths, 130 injuries and displacing nearly 1,000 people.

The clashes, which lasted all day, involved “aerial bombardments and heavy weaponry” and spread to the city centre and main market, as well as several residential neighbourhoods.

According to information received by OCHA, most of the displaced fled from eastern and north-western Al-Fasher to southern parts of the city, noting that “while the fighting has subsided, there are concerns that it could resume at short notice”.

This follows a wave of more than 40,000 internal displacements in Al-Fasher in early April, when “inter-communal conflict” erupted amid clashes between the RSF and the army in several parts of North Darfur.

OCHA recalled that the violence has “severely” restricted humanitarian access to Al-Fasher, and that so far in 2024, only 39 trucks have been able to enter through border crossings such as Tine, which links Darfur to Chad, where vehicles carrying 1,500 tons of non-food items have been waiting for weeks for the necessary approvals to cross.

“Even before these latest developments, over a year of conflict and persistent access constraints that impede the sustained delivery of aid and other essential commodities have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, where 9 million people are in need,” OCHA stressed.

Al-Fasher is the only state capital in the five Darfur states not controlled by the RSF, but the paramilitary’s offensive to take the strategic location is threatening more than 1.5 million people, including some 800,000 displaced, according to the UN.
