In a message published on the social network X, the president of the Spanish Government congratulated the leader of the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC), Salvador Illa, for "this historic result achieved in Catalonia".

When 99% of the votes had been counted, the Catalan socialists had won nearly 870,000 votes and 42 members of parliament (an absolute majority requires 68 elected members).

"The socialists are once again the leading force. Starting today, a new era begins in Catalonia to improve the lives of citizens, expand rights, and strengthen coexistence", declared Sánchez.

The socialist leader also wrote, in Catalan: "Catalonia is ready to make a new future a reality and to live in a time of hope".
