Partido Popular says that the Catalans have ended the separatist process

The president of the People's Party of Catalonia considered today that the Catalans "have ended the process" of secession, with the separatists losing the majority they had in parliament for 14 years, and asked for respect for the "mandate of society".

"The Catalans - and this is the essential mandate of these elections - have ended the [independence] process at the ballot box. This is the unappealable verdict of the ballot box, absolutely indisputable, and I ask everyone to take note and obey the mandate of Catalan society", said Alejandro Fernández, whose party rose from its current three deputies to 15.

The popular leader set the goal of contesting the victory in the next elections.

"Three years ago, we fell deeply, but we knew how to react. [...] The self-criticism and firmness with which we faced that disaster was the first stone for recovery and the humility with which we will face this result will be the first stone to achieve our next goal: in the following elections to be fighting above, for victory", said Fernández, in a statement to supporters.

The Catalan politician stressed that the PP achieved all its objectives: "It is the party that grows the most in percentage and in places. We assume the unquestionably constitutional leadership. We have ensured that separatism does not have a majority in Catalonia, a goal that until recently seemed like a chimera".

Alejandro Fernández also left a word to the "thousands of Catalans" who voted for Ciudadanos (liberal right), a party that won the Catalan elections in 2017, with more than one million votes and 36 deputies, but which today was out of the 'parlament', having about 22,500 votes, losing the six elected in 2021.

"I understand that it is a very sad night. Do not lose the illusion and hope. We commit ourselves to these voters to two things: to defend their principles and values, which are ours, in the 'parlament'" and to continue to grow and rebuild that winning political project that captivated them in 2017 and that today indisputably represents the Popular Party of Catalonia and we will live up to that wonderful goal", he said.
