In a report, the human rights organization accused Beijing of “transnational repression,” based on interviews with dozens of Chinese students in eight countries across Europe and North America.

Students interviewed who had taken part in events such as vigils for victims of the Tiananmen Massacre in their host countries said that their relatives back home had been threatened, Amnesty said.

“Threats to family members in mainland China included having their passports revoked, losing their jobs, being prevented from getting promoted or receiving a pension, or even having their physical liberty restricted,” AI said.

Some students interviewed also said they had been blocked from posting on Chinese social media and had been subjected to surveillance on those platforms, which are often the only way to communicate with family in China.

One student quoted by the NGO said police had shown his parents “transcripts of conversations he had on WeChat [an instant messaging app] with family members”.

Those surveyed said they practiced self-censorship in class and in social interactions, and complained of mental health problems caused by the feeling of being watched, citing issues ranging from “stress and anxiety to paranoia and depression”.

“I would love to publish my thesis… but I’m worried, so I chose not to,” one student said.

Beijing did not immediately react to the Amnesty report. However, China has rejected accusations that it targets its citizens abroad, saying it respects the sovereignty of other countries and acts in accordance with the law.
