The casualty figure includes Russian soldiers killed and wounded, and is higher than Kyiv had been reporting in recent weeks and months, when the toll was running at between 800 and 1,300 casualties most days.

Russia launched a cross-border assault into Ukraine’s northern Kharkiv region on Friday, breaking through Ukrainian defences that had protected the border with Russia and bringing the fighting deep inside Ukrainian territory.

Kyiv said fighting was taking place in towns in two separate districts of the Kharkiv border region.

Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022, has plunged Europe into its most serious security crisis since the second world war (1939-45).
