A group of worshippers were left in shock after a Catholic priest suggested Jesus Christ suffered an erection as he was crucified.

Father Thomas McHale used his Good Friday sermon to focus on the mechanics of Jesus’ body rather than the religious aspects of the crucifixion. He is said to have told the congregation that blood would have rushed to the lower half of Jesus’ body, causing his penis to become erect.

The claims were made in front of around 100 worshippers at a church in Blackhill, Consett, County Durham.

“He said Jesus died with an erection. The church was in shock. There were young families there,” one shocked churchgoer told The Times.

A complaint was made about the sermon and an investigation was launched.

“A complaint was received and investigated in line with our diocesan complaints policy. The investigation has very recently concluded and the complaint has been upheld,” a spokesperson for the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle said.

It is understood that Fr McHale is still carrying out his priestly duties.
