Tunisian lawyers on strike after colleague's arrest
Tunisian lawyers observed a day-long strike in all courts across the country today in protest at the weekend’s forced detention of a prominent female lawyer at the headquarters of their professional order.

"The strike was 100% respected," Laroussi Zguir, president of the Bar Association in the Tunisian capital, told the media, in statements made in front of the Tunis first instance court.
Dozens of lawyers demonstrated at the same court against the arrest of their colleague, demanding her "immediate" release, the French news agency AFP reported.
The strike was decided after the violent arrest, on Saturday night, of the lawyer and a well-known critic of the political power Sonia Dahmani, at the premises of the Bar Association in Tunis, where she had taken refuge after being summoned by an investigating judge due to comments made on television.
During a television broadcast on May 7, Dahmani ironically pointed out the current panorama in Tunisia.
"What extraordinary country are we talking about?" said the lawyer, in response to another commentator who had just stated that immigrants from various sub-Saharan African countries were seeking to settle in Tunisia.
On Saturday, plainclothes and masked police officers stormed the headquarters of the Bar Association in Tunis, assaulted lawyers and journalists and arrested Sonia Dahmani, according to videos and testimonies, cited by international agencies.
According to her lawyers, Dahmani was indicted for "false information with the aim of undermining public safety" and "incitement to hate speech", based on Decree-Law 54.
This decree, enacted in September 2022 by President Kais Saied, provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison for anyone who uses information and communication networks to "write, produce, disseminate or reproduce fake news (...) with the aim of undermining the rights of another or compromising public safety".
On Saturday night into Sunday, two other commentators were arrested under the same law, for statements they had made in the media.
An investigating judge extended their preventive detention for 48 hours.
