A curator at the American Museum of Natural History was detained at Istanbul Airport in Turkey on Monday.

According to Turkish media, the man allegedly tried to smuggle around 1,500 samples from the country, including scorpions, tarantulas and other spiders native to Turkey.

According to the Anadolu Agency, Lorenzo Prendini had 88 bottles containing some liquid and animal samples inside, which were stored in his luggage. According to the press, the DNA of these species can be used to produce medicines.

A specialist in Turkey also told Reuters that a liter of scorpion venom can be worth ten million dollars, around nine million euros.

According to a video that the press will have viewed, there were also plastic bags that appeared to contain dead spiders and scorpions inside.

According to the museum's website, Lorenzo Prendini has traveled to more than 30 countries due to his work. CBS News also reports on a similar case that occurred in 2022, in the US state of Oregon.
