During a phone call, according to the Egyptian Ministry, the two heads of diplomacy addressed the humanitarian and security consequences "of the Israeli military operations in the Palestinian city of Rafah", as well as Israel's control of the border crossing of the same name, which is preventing the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Shukri reminded Blinken that more than 1.4 million people are being severely affected "as a result of the closure of the Rafah crossing and the continuation of large-scale Israeli attacks", while insisting on the need to reopen the crossing and allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

The head of Egyptian diplomacy stressed "the serious security risks arising from the continuation of Israeli military operations", claiming that this initiative represents a "serious threat associated with the stability of the region".

Both diplomats highlighted the importance of opening the land crossings that connect the Gaza Strip to Israel to allow access to humanitarian aid in sufficient quantities.

According to estimates by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), around 360,000 people have fled Rafah since the first evacuation order issued by the Israeli Army a week ago.

Over the past weekend, Israel expanded the displacement order for refugees to other areas in the centre of Rafah and, today, added another two districts located in the western half.

According to figures from the Islamist group Hamas, more than 35,000 people, mostly women and children, have died since the beginning of the war in Gaza, on 7 October, and almost 79,000 have been injured, in addition to around 10,000 missing people who are believed to be trapped under the rubble of buildings destroyed by the continuous bombings.
