In a statement, the EU Council announced that it will extend the suspension of customs duties from 6 June of this year until 5 June 2025.

Meanwhile, the autonomous rules for Moldova have been extended from 25 July until 24 July of next year, which "also strengthens the protection for sensitive agricultural products, by increasing the safeguard mechanism that already exists".

The European Union (EU) will extend the suspension of customs duties on exports from Ukraine to the EU27 for another year, following the Russian invasion, the European Commission announced today.

In a statement, the EU executive announced the suspension of customs duties on products imported from Ukraine for another year, after the EU Council adopted this decision today and the European Parliament approved it on 23 April.

At the same time, a "reinforced safeguard mechanism" will also be in force to avoid disruptions in the EU internal market or in some Member States, which includes an "emergency brake" for imports of eggs, poultry, sugar, oats, corn and honey, which can be triggered immediately if the volume of imports reaches the annual average of imports recorded between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2023.

On 31 January 2024, the European Commission proposed extending for another year the suspension of import duties and quotas on all imports from Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union.

The proposal was presented in the context of Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine and the consequent continued impact on Moldova, the resulting need to continue supporting the two countries and takes into account that Kiev and Chisinau were granted candidate status to the political-economic bloc in June 2022 and accession negotiations were opened in December 2023.
