Iran “must immediately quash” the sentence “and stop executing people for exercising their rights to freedom of expression,” said the experts, who include the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, Javaid Rehman.

In a statement, the experts noted that the sentencing comes just days after rapper Toomaj Salehi was sentenced to death on charges of “enmity against God,” “corruption on earth” and “incitement to violence,” following his support for the protests that erupted after the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022.

Amini died in custody after being detained for allegedly wearing the Islamic headscarf improperly.

The statement was also signed by the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, and the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Morris Tidball-Binz.

“Such executions are completely inconsistent with international human rights law and standards,” the UN experts said, noting that at least five people have been sentenced to death in Iran in connection with the protests since September 2022, while 15 others remain at risk of execution.
