"The destiny of the world depends on the course that the United States takes"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed to the United States on Monday to prevent pro-Palestinian activists on U.S. campuses, who have been calling for a cease-fire in Gaza for weeks, from influencing Washington's foreign policy.

"Where is America going? Will it succumb to this madness, to these mobs on campuses, to this blatant anti-Semitism that is sweeping the world?" Netanyahu asked in an interview with American columnist Dan Senor, which is making waves in the Israeli media.

"The fate of the world depends on the course that America takes. I think for the sake of humanity, for the sake of our common future, our common values, our civilization, it is very important that America maintain its preeminent position as the world's leading power," the Israeli prime minister argued.

Netanyahu argued that the United States' position as the hegemonic power is also being challenged as a way, according to the politician, of attacking Israel, trying to draw a parallel between the situation in the Middle East and the criticism that Washington is receiving for its role in this crisis.

"These mobs on American campuses burn the Israeli flag and the American flag. They chant: 'Death to Israel, death to America.' So we are fighting a common battle, a battle between civilization and barbarism," the Israeli prime minister said.

In this interview, Netanyahu once again warned that Israel will continue alone with regard to the invasion of Rafah (in the southern Gaza Strip) even without the support of its traditional allies, especially the US, which announced a moratorium on arms supplies due to this incursion.

"If we have to stand alone, we'll stand alone," insisted Netanyahu, who recalled that this tension between the United States and Israel does not help the negotiations for the release of the hostages who remain in the hands of Hamas.

The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which caused about 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

Since then, Israel has launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has caused more than 35,000 deaths, according to Hamas, which has governed the small Palestinian enclave since 2007.

The Israeli retaliation is causing a serious humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is already claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in food security studies in the world.

Rafah, on the border with Egypt, is the main crossing point for humanitarian aid to Gaza and where more than a million displaced Palestinians from other parts of the territory have taken refuge.

Despite international appeals, Israel is maintaining its military action in Rafah, where it says the last active units of the Palestinian extremist group Hamas are located.
